RYD PAY is available at numerous petrol stations throughout Germany. We are enormously proud that RYD, as one of the leading startus in this area, has chosen wallee as its payment processor. Learn more about RYD PAY and about Scheme Token - the next big thing to increase conversion in the payment process.

Who and what is RYD PAY?

RYD, the largest independent connected car platform in Germany, has integrated wallee into their mobile app RYD with the wallee paymentSDK for Android and iOS.The wallee payment SDK enables RYD to capture payment data securely and PCI-DSS compliant.wallee stores the payment data in its infrastructure for secure further processing.

Take a look at how RYD PAY has integrated our mobile SDK into its mobile app.

  1. Customers can create an account/profile within the app, in which the access data and payment information are stored.
  2. With the app, customers can find the petrol stations that support this app in their vicinity. The customer drives to the petrol station to fill up his car.
  3. Customers fill up their car as usual. However, instead of going to the shop to pay for the petrol, they open the app and dial the number of the pump they just used to fill up their car.
  4. The data for this pump is loaded onto the screen: Litre quantity, amount in euros and payment method (which is stored in the app). All the customer has to do is click on the "Pay now" button and off they go.
  5. The payment is initiated, authorised and completed in the cloud via the token that wallee has stored in the backend. The customer receives the invoice directly to their email address, which is also stored in their account/profile, and the customer can drive off with a filled car.

The process is documented below with some screenshots. There is also a YouTube video showing the process.

Create an account or profile.

Search for the petrol stations through the app.

Choose your petrol pump.

Click on the Pay Now button.

The payment is being processed.

Outlook - Technical and regulatory challenges Scheme Tokens (M4M and VTS)

With the trend towards digitalisation and mobile apps, payment is becoming an invisible process where the card is charged almost unnoticed. This allows the merchant to charge the payment data when the customer is not present or, as here, to charge the payment data without asking the customer to present it again - the payment process fades into the background to create a hopefully seamless checkout experience.A process we all know from apps like Uber, MyTaxi, Fairtiq, SBB - Mobile, etc.. However, regulatory and technical challenges are just around the corner.

  1. PSD2 requires proper handling of these tokens. First of all, secure authentication is required when adding the card. If the use case is not a merchant-initiated transaction or otherwise exempt from the SCA, the token purchase must also be properly authenticated by a second factor. For more information, please see our PSD 2 update. Wallee provides the necessary tools to process transactions as seamlessly as possible in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  2. Card details expire after a certain time and you have to ask your customers to update their payment details. Of course, this disrupts the customer's seamless checkout experience and could be a potential reason for customer churn. However, the international schemes are currently introducing new products that allow you as a merchant to tokenise the card with the payment system. In this case, the card number is not only stored within the PSP but also with the international schemes(Visa / MasterCard / Amex / etc) and tokenised if the card issuers participate (which will soon be mandatory for many). This has the great advantage that you as a merchant will be notified when the card is replaced, expired, stolen etc. This makes it possible to increase the authorisation rate and increase conversion as less interaction with the buyer is needed or a more specific interaction becomes possible as you as a merchant could proactively ask the buyer to update the card. Wallee is currently implementing tokenisation for the new digital products with Visa and Mastercard.

There are other interesting use cases that can be realised based on the above technology. The increased issuer participation allows you as a merchant to learn more about the tokenised credit card. More information is given about whether you can charge the card before the transaction starts, which in itself opens up new possibilities.
